Notes to editors:
- Before construction of any major road scheme can proceed the Department must make a number of statutory orders and seek approval for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The EIA analyses any predicted environmental effects the scheme would have and measures proposed to reduce or eliminate those effects.
- The A5 Western Transport Corridor dual carriageway scheme is an Executive flagship project which will provide 85 kilometres of dual carriageway commencing just south of Londonderry at New Buildings, bypassing Strabane, Newtownstewart, Omagh, Ballygawley and Aughnacloy before terminating at the existing A5 just south of Aughnacloy.
- Following the court’s agreement in November 2018 to quash decisions made by the Department in relation to the A5 dual carriageway, work has been progressing to enable a fresh decision on whether to proceed with this Flagship project to be taken.
- Since the publication of the Environmental Statement in 2016 there have been some changes to the environmental baseline and project delivery timeframe. As a result, an addendum to the Environmental Statement (and associated Non-Technical Summary) has now been prepared for public consultation.
- The Environmental Statement addendum should be read in conjunction with Environmental statement (ES2016) which was consulted on in 2016.
