Speaking following the meeting, Minister Hazzard said:

“Shanghai port is now the world’s busiest container port. China’s ports, like ours, are a resource and economic driver that needs support and development to maximise every opportunity.  Much has been invested to allow Shanghai port to develop, including the provision of an integrated transport system.

“Our ports too play a crucial role by supporting key gateways to international trade and the wider global economy.  This is something I am keen to develop and building links with the wider transport network is vital to that growth.

“My visit to China this week, in line with the Executive’s strategy to build our relationship with the region, has been very useful. I will be reflecting on some of the innovative and creative projects I have seen working for Chinese cities to see how we can adapt them for the north.”
