The Blue Badge Unit, which is part of the Department for Infrastructure, is responsible for the administration of the Blue Badge Scheme. The legislative basis for this function is the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons (Northern Ireland) Act 1978 and The Disabled Persons (Badges for Motor Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2016.

Why we process your personal information

The information you provide on your application form, along with any supporting evidence provided by your doctor or relevant health care professional, or a letter of award of High Rate Mobility, is used for the purpose of assessing and issuing a Blue Badge and for managing and operating the Blue Badge Scheme.

Who we may share your personal information with

  • The information provided may be shared with your doctor to confirm your eligibility for the issue of a Blue Badge.
  • To ensure the scheme is being operated fairly checks may be carried out by the Department’s Parking Enforcement Unit and may result in you being contacted.
  • Your Blue Badge details will be entered onto the Blue Badge Improvement Service (BBIS) database. This is a UK wide database. This is only used for the prevention / detection of fraud and will flag up any duplicate badge applications to the relevant issuing office.
  • If a crime is detected or suspected, information may be shared with PSNI.

How long your personal data may be kept

The Department has a Retention and Disposal of Records schedule. Blue Badge applications will be held for 6 months after expiry of Badge or rejection of application and then destroyed.

Your rights

  • You have the right to obtain confirmation that your data is being processed, and access to your personal data;
  • You are entitled to have personal data rectified if it is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • You have the right to object to the processing, in specific circumstances.
